Mindfulness in Psychotherapy:  The Role of Self-Reflective Function

Marjorie Schuman, Ph.D.

In this salon, Marjorie Schuman will present a mindfulness-informed approach to psychotherapy which engages mindful awareness as a self-reflective strategy. The therapeutic framework to be described is fundamentally relational, blending contemporary psychoanalytic theory with the wisdom of Buddhism.  Mindfulness and other ‘awareness practices’ are incorporated in the clinical work as skillful means which amplify and clarify the psychodynamic dimensions of experience.  Broadly speaking, the goal in this approach is deep emotional and relational understanding, including especially self-reflective awareness of self, connection, and the boundaries between self and other.

The presentation will discuss the role of self-reflection in psychological development and in psychotherapy.  Along with a penetrating analysis of conceptual issues, the presentation will be illustrated with clinical vignettes.

Upon completion of this salon, participants will be able to:

1.  Compare similarities and differences between mindfulness meditation in Buddhism and mindfulness in psychotherapy.

2. List some of the benefits for mindfulness for both therapist and client.

3. Explain the importance of self-reflective awareness in psychological growth and development.
